Exodus 14:5

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”

My brother had a friend who was into all sorts of crazy things 50 years ago and had a “conversion experience”, and then went out and smashed his rock albums, a precious commodity in the 70’s. Then a few months later, I saw in the paper that he was arrested for purse snatching. I thought back to the record smashing moment and pictured him asking, “What have I done?!?” Pharaoh could relate. He and the Egyptians had been “converted” by the last plague and the death of their firstborn and let the people go. Then they had time to ponder their decision and count the cost. They would be forced to do manual labor! They wished they could undo the decision and Pharaoh tried to do just that.

There is a cost to discipleship that comes with salvation. Suddenly, those things you used to love, you now hate. Conversely, those people you once despised for their goody goody ways are now your brothers and sisters. This cannot be faked. There will come a time when the cost becomes permanent. You have given your heart to Jesus. It was not just a loan that you can take back when it gets a little difficult. You are now his and, more importantly, he is yours. He will never renege on his covenant with you. His mind is unchanged.

O Heavenly Father, you have given everything to us and done so much. You have never changed your love for us. May we never regret following you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
