Revelation 4:1

After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

Our family had a Christmas tradition of watching the 1970 musical Scrooge while eating McDonalds. Don’t judge me! The best line that entered our vocabulary was from the Ghost of Christmas Present to Scrooge. “Come over here, you weird little man!” He was an imposing sight indeed but nothing remotely like the experience John had in Revelation 4. His senses must have exploded when he looked and saw a door open in heaven. Then again when he heard the trumpet-like voice calling, “Come up here…”. Some people see in this the rapture but not even many premillennialists agree with this. Instead it more closely resembles Paul’s calling up into the third heaven. It was a special vision for the purpose of communicating Jesus’ kingship on the throne!

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and worship the King on his throne for revealing himself in Scripture. Many worshipers across America tomorrow will seek such sensory overload in their services with light shows and smoke machines, as well as loud music to awaken the senses. Just like the Ghost of Christmas Present, it is a poor substitute for the real thing, the Christ himself on the throne! Come and worship the King and let us not be distracted by sensory overload, but called to come into his presence with thanksgiving.

O Heavenly Father, you are on your throne and we worship you for your excellent goodness, not our own. May we see you tomorrow as you reveal yourself in Scripture. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
