Exodus 39:42-43
According to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the people of Israel had done all the work. 43 And Moses saw all the work, and behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, so had they done it. Then Moses blessed them.
Mission Accomplished. That is a phrase with an unknown origin but was famously used by a past president to much fanfare. It simply means it was done. Whether big or small, each completion is a source of satisfaction. This project was seemingly small, the making of the priestly garments. The detail that God commanded is astonishing until we realize the role of the priest. The High Priest was to represent the people to God and God to the people. The garments were to reflect that mediating role and remind the people that God is with them and commands worship. These verses tell us that the people were united in the work and the mission was accomplished.
There has been an unending debate about the “priestly garments” preachers wear in the pulpit. It is said that the Bible Fellowship Church partly owes its existence to a refusal to wear a black robe while preaching. Now, we have preachers in suits and in hoodies and untied work boots. Whatever side you are on, we can still be united as the people under Moses were. Pastors dressed in both ensembles have been falling because they are ignoring the command of the Lord to be holy. Today, we have a mission to accomplish, to love our God and our neighbor, and to make disciples. Like Jesus, may we say, “It is finished”.
Dear Lord, thank you that we can hear the word of God. we pray for your commands to be obeyed. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
