You have kept count of my tossings;
put my tears in your bottle.
Are they not in your book?
9 Then my enemies will turn back
in the day when I call.
This I know, that God is for me.
10 In God, whose word I praise,
in the LORD, whose word I praise,
11 in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can man do to me?
As children, we sought to avoid the wrath of Mom with any lie that would assuage it, no matter how blatantly obvious. I suspect we knew we were deceiving ourselves and we knew she knew. That seems to be the attitude of David here in this psalm. He knew he could not fool an omniscient God and admitted it. He could not pretend to not be afraid and he said so in verse 3. What he does reveal in this psalm is that he will trust God, much like kids trust Mom, because of their steadfast love and faithfulness.
What we can learn from this is that we can admit to being afraid of what may happen to us, as long as, when we are afraid, we trust in the Lord. Man can do a lot to our frail physical being but man cannot separate us from the steadfast love of our God. He displayed this love on the cross. In the garden, we have a hard time imagining Jesus in anguish but it is our comfort that we can anguish at our trials and the state of the world but end with “Thy will be done”.
Dear Lord, thank you that when we are afraid, we can trust in you. Help us to seek your face and your will on earth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
