38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.”
In the past few decades, the rise of the “seeker church” and “seeker friendly service” has been a topic of debate and a source of consternation, for good reason. One of the tactics in a seeker service is to avoid using the name Jesus Christ until people are more comfortable. There is a massive problem with that and Jesus himself exposed it here. Jesus proclaimed that he IS that which they are seeking so it is our duty to proclaim the name of that which they seek. Of course, they will be uncomfortable. Sinners are uncomfortable when they are exposed in the sight of sinless perfection and Andrew, one of the two, went and found his brother. His name was Peter.
They were seeking hope in a dark world. Billions of people are seeking the same thing but will not find it outside of Jesus Christ. That is the irony of the seeker sensitive movement. It attempts to attract seekers by avoiding the name of the Great Seeker who seeks the lost. I was lost until Jesus rescued me. I was not seeking him, but running from him. The best seeker service helps the runners, by shining the light of Jesus Christ on them. The lost are found when Jesus chooses them and reveals his light in the darkness. Revealing his name is better than concealing it.
Dear Lord, thank you for revealing your name as “The Lord Saves”, Yeshua. We pray for those who seek hope and salvation to hear the name of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
