Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10 and repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. 11 You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.
There are two equally dangerous reactions to being sinned against. One is to lash out in fury at the wrong and the other is to do the “slow burn”, only to flame out and grow cold, failing to deal with the sin at all. The first does things they regret and the second grows ulcers. God the Father is longsuffering and merciful. He is also just and is not slack. This word means that he will not do the slow burn when the time comes for action.
That is great news for us but not for many of our loved ones. God is God. He will be faithful to his covenant people and will destroy those who hate him and reject his Son Jesus Christ. He calls his covenant people to be careful to remember the covenant and what he has done. He will not be hesitant when he returns and it will be too late. Today, may we sense the urgency for those we love to surrender to God the Father’s power, justice, and steadfast love. Jesus kept the statutes. We keep the faith.
Dear Lord, thank you that God is God and for your steadfast love that saves us. We pray in Jesus’ name for those who are perishing.
