Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? 9 For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory.

We know simply by our knowledge of human nature that a lawless society will plunge into self-preservation and violence. Therefore law is good and Paul would agree. He used a literary device to exaggerate the difference between the law of Moses and the New Covenant in Christ’s blood. It is not always the case, especially with appliances, but here Paul agrees with the author of Hebrews that “newer is better”. The perfect law perfectly exposed the sin of an imperfect people. That is why Paul introduced the ministry of the Spirit as a much better glory.

We know what has happened in America as we have become more lawless, More importantly though, we see also what has happened as our nation has become more godless. The two go hand in hand. Without the perfect law of God the Father, God the Son would not have come to redeem us and we would not have God the Holy Spirit. The law was carved in stone, but to paraphrase Jeremiah, it is now carved into our hearts. Let America see the difference between law and grace in the grace shown to us and through us in someone’s life.

Dear Lord, thank you that the Spirit wrote the law on our hearts. Help us to be grateful for the change you made in our lives and change another today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
