Save me, O God!
For the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in deep mire,
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood sweeps over me.
3 I am weary with my crying out;
my throat is parched.
My eyes grow dim
with waiting for my God.
In the history of movies, nothing creates suspense like impending doom. From the damsel tied to the railroad tracks to the stranded astronauts in Apollo 13, our palms sweat in anticipation for the rescue. Fans of cinema will find much food for thought in this psalm, as in it David let out a last gasp cry for help before the water covered him in dramatic fashion. But that is nor what happened. God delivered David from Saul, his own son Absalom, and other dangers. It is before that deliverance that caused him to end verse 3 with the lament that he waits for his God.
You may feel that, in this world, the water is up to your neck. You may be drowning in financial woes, feeling overwhelmed with an illness that will not go away, or buried in stress from strife with a loved one. You may even think God cannot save you in time. Not so. Just before the villain of the piece, Satan, could claim victory, the Savior Jesus Christ came to save you from the trainwreck of sin and bring you back to the safety of the earth. That is the end of that saga but not the end of the story. Now, even in your darkest moments, you can be assured while waiting for the Lord that he will come. This movie has a happy ending. We know because…
We can read the script.
