Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones. 9 But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”
If you are lonely and no one seems to agree with your worldview, the internet has come to the rescue, for good or ill, mostly ill. It is possible to find affirmation for the most morally impoverished behavior and ideology on the Dark Web, whose very name denotes evil. In Jude’s day, there was no such option so they relied on their dreams to justify their sin. They “received” a vision and it said that it was good to defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious ones, angels. No one is sure what this means but the concept is a sound one. The angel Michael left such things to the Lord.
People today will have camaraderie with those who share their evil desires and schemes. They will find justification and community where there should be none. That is the state of the world today. People seek community and affirmation in the wrong places. The number one place on planet earth for community and joy is a church near you, not someone on the other side of the world you have never seen. It is time to end the Dark Web and shine the light of Jesus on a dark world. He is the authority and community we seek. Just ask him.
Dear Lord, you are the Sovereign Lord over all things, good and evil. Help us to seek freedom from sin instead of seeking justification for our sin. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
