Then Joshua blessed him, and he gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for an inheritance. 14 Therefore Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he wholly followed the LORD, the God of Israel.
At first glance , this would seem to be just one of the long list of land inheritances given out when the Israelites entered the Promised Land. The tribes got theirs but this one was different. Caleb was rewarded for his faith but even that was not the prime difference. The difference came a few verses before.
And now, behold, I am this day eighty-five years old. 11 I am still as strong today as I was in the day that Moses sent me
We can picture Caleb now if we remember some of the men from the greatest generation who fought in “The Big One”, WWII. it seemed there was no stopping them. Sadly there are few left of that generation.
No fear. We are the generation that God is using today to make disciples of all nations. All of us. Many reading this may be 85 or thereabouts. What a comfort to read this! We never outlive our usefulness to the Lord. He will reward your faith, not with land but with more work to do for the kingdom. Joshua himself was old by this time but he still had work given him by the LORD. All of us have a divine appointment, not with the LORD but with someone today. With Jesus, you are as strong as ever!
Dear Lord, thank you that you are never done with us, even if we think we are done. Help us to continue the work you have given us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
