May the LORD cut off all flattering lips,
the tongue that makes great boasts,
4 those who say, “With our tongue we will prevail,
our lips are with us; who is master over us?”
Nobody can tell me what to do! I will follow my heart and my feelings! That has become a mantra for today, taught in our public schools so that, now the students run the universities and the educated adults cower beneath them, seemingly powerless to stand up to them. It is a bizarre world we live in but David, in Psalm 12, shows us that there is nothing new under the sun. In the time of David, there were those who felt empowered to speak their desires into existence, a power only God possesses. They refused to submit to anyone, even the Creator who could destroy them, by living as if he did not exist. David’s cry for divine justice echoes our own in these times. He would have the Lord disfigure them and render them mute.
Instead, God sent Jesus because he so loved the world, even these scoffers, and saved us through his shed blood on the cross. That is not the “just desserts” we clamor for when we read the news and it convicts us that we need to pray for these people who have been taught to trust themselves that the Lord is far more trustworthy. He promises to never leave us nor forsake us. He promises salvation for those who believe. For the rest, they will wish for death and it will not come. They need Jesus urgently.
Dear Lord, thank you that our worries can be cast at your feet. We pray for those who rely on their lips and tongue for their self worth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
