Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.

The Southern Baptist Conference is actively debating today the role of women in ministry. The Bible Fellowship Church has spent 2 annual conferences on that topic. In the case of the BFC, the interpretation of Scripture is clear that women cannot be elders and pastors. This verse states however, that they can be and should be honored and understood. This means utilizing their gifts for teaching and discipleship, among many other gifts. Peter’s admonition to wives is clear in the previous verses. He is just as direct here. Paul said love your wives as Christ loved the church. Die for her. Peter says understand and honor her. Many good things happen when this is heeded in the family, in the church, and in all of society.

As Fathers Day approaches, may we as men remember that our heavenly Father so loved the world. Our heavenly Father sent Jesus to die for all people. Our heavenly Father has a role for each of his children in the church, a body with many parts. If we acknowledge Jesus as head of the church, a lot of heartache and strife can be avoided from arguments about our rights. May we see that the rights we have earned will land us in Hell. It is the grace of Christ alone that places us where we are, right where God wants us.

Dear Lord, thank you for the roles we have in the body. May we seek to honor you and each other as we work together for the Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
