This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.

25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

When we swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth in a court of law, there is a serious consequence to violating that oath. When John swore that his testimony was true, we have an extra special reason for believing it. He had seen the other apostles suffer and die, one by one, for their faith. For whatever reason, God saw fit to have John live a long life. Jesus even told Peter words to that effect a few verses earlier. John was allowed a glimpse into the end of all things, when Jesus returns. He bore witness to quite a lot!

He wrote these things that we may believe that Jesus is God, King, and Messiah. He wrote these things that we may believe that by believing in him, we shall not perish but have eternal life. If John made these things up, he and the other apostles were fools to suffer as they did. You may be suffering hardship today but you are no fool if you trust God with the result, whether it hurts or not. In this way, you are in a long line with David, John, Paul, and our Lord himself, Jesus Christ. His word is true.

Dear Lord, thank you that we do not have to wonder if what you said is true. We know your word is truth. Help our unbelief. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
