So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.
When Jesus was transfigured, Peter was there. When Jesus was arrested, Peter was there. When Jesus was risen, Peter was there. He was the rock. He was commanded by Jesus to feed his sheep. He could have told every subsequent follower of Christ that they could not come close to the importance of the Apostle Peter. We see here that he did the opposite, saying he is just one of the elders, albeit one who witnessed great things. He was in a perfect position to leverage his authority but chose instead to instruct his fellow elders.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow as we begin honoring our elders in June, Elder Appreciation Month. Our elders will preach, Carl Fahrner will preach tomorrow, Carl Price on the 23rd, and Michael Polach on the 30th. As a fellow elder, I will preach the 9th and 16th. Our elders shepherd the flock well and, Paul says, are worthy of honor as examples to the flock. Come and join us in lifting up those who lift us up. Together, may we all worship the Good Shepherd and learn from his perfect example.
Dear Lord, thank you for the leaders you have called and continue to call. May we be thankful and respectful to those you have sent us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
