God is a righteous judge,
and a God who feels indignation every day.
12 If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;
he has bent and readied his bow;
13 he has prepared for him his deadly weapons,
making his arrows fiery shafts.
14 Behold, the wicked man conceives evil
and is pregnant with mischief
and gives birth to lies.
The lawyer in Luke 10 knew his Scripture. He knew to love the Lord from Deuteronomy 6 and to love his neighbor from Leviticus 19. However, he did not know who his neighbor was. Jesus introduced the Good Samaritan. It is everyman. Here in Psalm 7, we see that God is holy and hates sin, which is a constant in the world. Who is the wicked man from verse 14? Verse 12 replies that it is the man who does not repent. In the Old Covenant, it is everyman. No one, including David who wrote this psalm, could keep the law.
That is why we praise the Lord for the cross! God is holy and we are not. He must punish sin but Jesus took the sin and the wrath. By ourselves, we are wicked, hatching plots and lying through our teeth, even to God. We insult God every day. We deserve the arrows of his wrath but the cross gives a way to salvation through repentance. We can surrender to his righteousness through repentance and live forever in his kingdom. Only the grace and mercy of a holy God can accomplish this. Praise the Lord that he could say, “It is finished.”
Dear Lord, thank you for what you have done and for our changed hearts and minds. We praise you that your wrath is satisfied and we pray for our neighbor. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
