Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?
Do you judge the children of man uprightly?
2 No, in your hearts you devise wrongs;
your hands deal out violence on earth.
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb;
they go astray from birth, speaking lies.
4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent,
like the deaf adder that stops its ear,
5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers
or of the cunning enchanter.
The internet has opinions. I see this in headlines sometimes. A celebrity will post something on social media and…the internet has opinions. Of course it does. We have become judges unto ourselves and with internet courage, have decreed what is right…but mostly what is wrong. And of course, we are always right, right? Not according to the psalmist. He describes the gods, which could be translated as mighty lords. The mighty lords, kings, or false gods all had opinions on what was right and what they said was right was right. Wrong. The heart is deceitful and cannot be trusted to deal justice but only violence. Human history has proven this to be right.
So many problems in this world could be solved by taking to heart this psalm. We cannot decree what is right, only God. We cannot create a Utopia, only a mess. We cannot judge uprightly but from our own desires. We were this way from birth and deserve death. Jesus Christ is the only way out of this mess. The internet’s opinions do not matter. Jesus will judge what is right and who is saved.
Dear Lord, thank you for the Psalms that praise you for who you are and expose who we are. Help us be more Christlike. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
