On the holy mount stands the city he founded;

            2       the LORD loves the gates of Zion

      more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.

            3       Glorious things of you are spoken,

      O city of God. Selah

Vicki and I have traveled far and wide to see beautiful homes like Winterthur in Delaware, Churchill’s home in England, and Biltmore in North Carolina. It is amazing to see the splendor of the architecture but it remains the work of man. J. M. Boice wrote of two well known Christians who derived the titles of their own works from verse 3 of this short psalm. John Newton wrote the Hymn, Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken, and Augustine wrote his great work, City of God on the last phrase. Their works, as well as the beautiful gates of Zion and his temple, are made possible by God. Jerusalem is the City of David, where Jesus rode in as a King to save the world through his death on the cross. There he also rose from the dead.

We have similar joy in our church and the beauty and quality of our sanctuary, especially after commemorating the finished work of Christ on Good Friday and the glorious victory of Easter. A lot of work went into preparing for both these services but the building, the meetings and the rehearsals pale in comparison to the craftsmanship Jesus puts into building his church with redeemed people. The LORD loves his church more than the French Palace, Versailles. May his people travel to see their local church this Sunday as the Resurrection Celebration continues throughout the year.

Dear Lord, thank you for building the church where we can worship you and fellowship with each other. May we be found there praying and singing to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
