But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

By this time, our corporate cynicism toward advertising has gleaned what “New and Improved” means. It means the label is different. Many things that people think are better have gotten worse. The phrase, “Newer is better”, has contributed to that problem. Israel was struggling with the covenant God made through Moses. No matter how they tried, they failed and could say, as the father of Indiana Jones said in Last Crusade, “Our situation has not improved.” The author of Hebrews tells of a new and improved covenant with a better mediator, the greater Moses, Jesus Christ. This covenant was truly better with better promises. Praise the Lord!

Our cynicism toward the state of the world may be as accurate as that toward advertising. The “progress” being made is down the wrong road, as C. S. Lewis said. The sooner society turns around and gets on the new road, the better. In the meantime, we can enjoy the benefits of a better covenant, a better Savior, and better promises, eternal life for all who believe. It truly is new and improved. Try it today. You will want to tell your friends all about it!

Dear Lord, thank you for the new covenant that we can be seen as righteous by being in Christ. Thank you for the promise of eternal life when this life seems like eternal drudgery. Help us to pray in gratitude for the strength to live this better life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
