Bold and willful, they do not tremble as they blaspheme the glorious ones, 11 whereas angels, though greater in might and power, do not pronounce a blasphemous judgment against them before the Lord.
Last Sunday, we completed our New Member classes to instruct prospective members what we believe and why we believe it. I was concerned that there would be much confusion about the end times because there are so many theories on how it will end. My fears were unfounded. Our people are well grounded in Scripture. It is Scripture that Peter wrote to explain one aspect of the judgment, that evil angels, false teachers, and unrepentant sinners are in trouble. Evil angels blaspheme boldly, whereas angels are careful to avoid blasphemy. False teachers also blaspheme in making God smaller than he is or subordinating Jesus. Willful sinners, as the others mentioned, are bold and willful in their mockery of a holy God. It is much better for the persecuted church, Peter says. They will be preserved from trial. They will suffer but the Lord will carry them through.
Today, we see many false teachers who would misrepresent God and those who mock God with their behavior. Their fate will be the same as the fallen angels who were cast down. They will suffer eternal consequences of their blasphemy. There is yet hope for them. It is the same hope graciously given to us when we ourselves were blaspheming and mocking God. He regenerated us and saved us and now sanctifies us by growing us closer to him. Now we no longer tremble.
Dear Lord, thank you that you chose to save us from the fate we deserve. May we share the message with those who mock you most. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
