The words of the LORD are pure words,
like silver refined in a furnace on the ground,
purified seven times.
7 You, O LORD, will keep them;
you will guard us from this generation forever.
Imagine what life would be like if we could trust nothing and there was a good chance a bridge or chair would collapse from your weight, causing injury or death. Only by having a reasonable certainty that, this time, the structure would support us, can we have the faith required to put it to the test. In this psalm, David comments on the word of the LORD. It is pure, unadulterated by lies and embellishments like our foolish vows are when we pledge our loyalty unto death. His word means that, not just this time, but every time, he will support you. He will keep us from all evil and protect us from the evil in this world. He is stronger than any bridge or chair. He is the Lord.
If that generation was so evil that the LORD protected David from them, what are we to make of this one? In every aspect, we can trust in nothing in this generation except the fact that no one is to be trusted. The word of people now goes no further than their mouths and they will turn back on a promise as the mood strikes. The world is polluted by sin and selfishness and there is only one hope of purification. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can cleanse this generation, of which we are part. Praise God for grace!
Dear Lord, thank you for cleansing this generation in the blood of the Lamb. Help us to preach the Good News to this generation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
