Give ear to my prayer, O God,
and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
2 Attend to me, and answer me;
I am restless in my complaint and I moan,
3 because of the noise of the enemy,
because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they drop trouble upon me,
and in anger they bear a grudge against me.
It is a terrible feeling to wake up in the morning, and feel the heaviness of your burdens before your feet touch the floor. That is why prayer is helpful before your feet touch the floor. David was under such heavy burdens as King Saul pursued him because God anointed David as the next king. His friend turned against him and David felt alone with only one alone he could cry out for. He chose his Father God and pleaded with him for mercy. The psalm ends with these words.
But I will trust in you.
Your feet have probably hit the floor already today but if today’s world has gotten you down and your personal burdens weigh heavily upon you, may your knees touch the floor as a sign of your trust in the Lord. You may be separated or estranged from a loved one but God promises that there is nothing that can separate you from his love. You may be under financial burdens but God promises to provide your needs. You may feel insignificant in this vast universe but God knows your name and has heard your cries. You can end your time of lament with the same words as David. But I will trust in you.
Dear Lord, thank you that you are with us always until the end of the age. May we in this age believe your promises. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
