But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
When we are in a landing airplane, we get ready to text our ride that, “I landed.” Of course, the pilot landed the plane that you were in. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that there is a treasure, the power of God and the gospel, and it is “in” jars of clay, our feeble humanity, which is “in Christ”. With God in him and Timothy, Paul could endure all the sufferings he encountered “in Christ” for the gospel. Philippians 4:13 says,
13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Paul was actually talking about enduring his imprisonment and possible death. 2 Corinthians 4:8 is very similar.
Now reverse that thought to illustrate how everything we do and endure is done because of who is “In us” That is what Paul says in verse 10. The life of Jesus is manifested in our bodies so we can do and endure all things that he calls us to. Then the glory and praise goes to him and not to us. Today, may we display the treasure of the gospel in our afflicted jars of clay so people will see God’s glory, not ours.
Dear Lord, thank you for the treasure that you entrusted us with. May we be good stewards and sharers of this treasure. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
