As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

At the same time our daughter Lauren graduated from Boston University, Harold Camping predicted the return of Jesus Christ. It seemed a shame that she wasted those years of education for nothing. Of course, it was not for nothing because the Lord still tarries. Camping was one of a long line of those who were certain they were privy to this privileged information that Jesus himself did not know on earth. Seventh Day Adventism owes its existence to a mischosen date in 1843, then 1844! The Jehovah’s Witnesses have chosen 1878, 1881, 1914, 1925, and 1975. I was personally involved in that last one as I was being raised in it at the time. One gets the impression that,

“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.”

That is because that is what Jesus said just after this question from his disciples. Yet man cannot leave it alone. We must know. The serpent knew this in the Garden and Adam and Eve fell into the trap. Although we do not know when Jesus will return, let us rejoice that he will come back to establish his kingdom. From that day, we will no longer care what day it is or what time it is. It will be time to worship our King.

Dear Lord, thank you for the future hope and promise of worshiping you forever. In the meantime, may we wait patiently for the harvest and labor in your field. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
