For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. 21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
2024 is an election year for the presidency. If you had not realized it, I apologize for being the one to break it to you. The news cycle and the advertising during this season can be described with one word; negative. The news about candidates and their positions, debate performances and decades old emails, are all negative. The only positive to take out of it is that it ends in November. That is what makes these verses from Paul to the Corinthian church so astounding. The entire first letter was negative so the arrival of this letter was not promising. Then come these promises and the ultimate positive. Yes.
When God makes a campaign promise, it is so positive that the only word to describe it is yes. Our only response, in contrast to the skepticism directed toward candidates, is Amen to God for his glory. He promised to establish us in Christ, in covenant, to anoint us, and to give us his identity with his royal seal as if we were his sons and daughters. While we will hear a lot of guarantees this year, the only one that is truly guaranteed is that God will be faithful.
Dear Lord, thank you that in a sea of negativity is your Yes. May we say yes and amen to your promises to us. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
