For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.
Nowhere do we do more boasting than in our resumes. We inflate our accomplishments while minimizing our weaknesses. We tend to look good on paper. At first glance, this would look like Paul’s resume sent to the church in Corinth for him to interview for the position of Apostle. Elsewhere in his letters, Paul denounces boasting in anything but the Lord. He will talk about boasting more in this letter than in all others combined. The reason is this. Many in the church simply do not like Paul and do not think him qualified for the job he claims for himself. There is one problem with this view. He did not claim it for himself. He was called by the grace of God.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow and learn why Paul needed to tout his behavior as simple and sincere. We will take away from it the humility that comes not from padding our attributes but trusting our Lord for his grace and wisdom to perform the task he calls us to. It is not boasting to say we are faithful and obedient to our Master and Lord. It is simply and sincerely our honor and privilege to behave with his wisdom instead of earthly wisdom. Come and see what the Lord has done and what you can do for him. May we boast in the Lord.
Dear Lord, thank you that we can boast about your great deeds while serving you in humility. Help us to serve without bragging about anyone but Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
