“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

In a documentary, I heard a Christian scholar describe an impact event. We all know where we were when the towers fell on 9/11. In the first century, the disciples of Jesus experienced the biggest impact event in history, the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. None of them would forget what they saw, no matter how much time had passed. In John’s case, many decades passed, about 60 years. How could an old man remember so much? John answered your question 2,000 years ago in these verses and at the same time, recorded the words of Jesus on the role the Holy Spirit plays in the Triune plan of God. He brings the teaching of Jesus to remembrance.

John could record these words because the Holy Spirit guided him and inspired him to write just what Jesus said. That is a Helper indeed! What’s more, the Helper is here to help us as well by bringing to remembrance the words of the Bible. He brings to remembrance our numerous sins that required forgiveness so our love of Jesus would be amplified when the Helper brings to remembrance what Jesus did for us on the cross. The Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bring to remembrance the majesty and mercy of God. Praise him today!

Dear Lord, we do praise you for the remembrance of your word, our sin, and your mercy. May we remember what you did for us so we love you more. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
