Genesis 43:13-14
Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man. 14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”
If you heard our sermon series on the life of Joseph from Genesis 37-50, you will know about the first journey to Egypt that the brothers of Joseph made to get food during the famine. Here Jacob sent them back for more but Judah reminded him that Benjamin would have to go too. Here is Jacob’s surrender to the will of his long lost son Joseph. Note his air of resignation as he says, “If I am bereaved, I am bereaved.”, as if he fully expects never to see again Simeon, who is already there, Benjamin, who will go there, as well as Joseph, who unbeknownst to anyone, is also there. Jacob’s resignation will turn to celebration once he realizes the full story.
“When you’re dead, you’re dead” These words of resignation are heard from many people who expect very little from life. Unfortunately, they are seldom disappointed. If that is your view of life, celebration and a cheery view of the future are rare occurrences. But if resignation takes the form of absolute surrender to the will of God who loves us and cares for us, there is the consolation that God has riches, mercy, and rejoicing in store for us. We know there is more to the story than the trouble and suffering in front of us at the moment. We know that all things lead to good for those who love him. We can say with expectation…
May God Almighty grant you mercy.
