Psalm 121:5-8

            The LORD is your keeper;

      the LORD is your shade on your right hand.

            6       The sun shall not strike you by day,

      nor the moon by night.

            7       The LORD will keep you from all evil;

      he will keep your life.

            8       The LORD will keep

      your going out and your coming in

      from this time forth and forevermore.

We can tell who is trustworthy in our lives by what they do. If they have been faithful in keeping promises in the past, we can say this person is trustworthy and will keep their promise in the future. Take a look at this psalm about the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The sojourners can see the city but they have not yet arrived. Notice the LORD is mentioned twice as who he is. Then he is mentioned twice more as what he will do. He is your shepherd and he will protect you from the wolves forever.

We have that same promise because the greatest promise God ever made has come to pass. Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, has come to earth as a man, suffered and died for our sins, and rose again from the dead. He is the Messiah. He is the Savior. He is our Shepherd. Like the pilgrims outside Jerusalem, we are on a long and tiring journey. Take heart today in the fact that Jesus is trustworthy and he will keep his promise to preserve your soul. Let that be our comfort as we lift our eyes to the hills for help.

Dear Lord, thank you that you are our shepherd and you will be our protection. We pray for those who look elsewhere for help today. Make us a blessing to them today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
