For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,

      and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,

            24       to preserve you from the evil woman,

      from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.

            25       Do not desire her beauty in your heart,

      and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;

Regardless of the controversy over the posting of the 10 Commandments at courthouses, there is a positive purpose for having the reminder right in front of you. Unfortunately, the reminders we get from the culture, especially in entertainment, is to go ahead, sin is fun. Our citizens have become good students of this discipline because not only is adultery prevalent, the idea of marriage has become obsolete. This proverb from a father to a son is a warning to not even watch the show because of the inevitable result. Rather, the son is commanded to keep the command in front of him like a lamp lighting the way to safety.

I am astounded at the weekly news stories of prominent pastors falling into sin and adultery all over America. It makes me wonder what they have leading their way. Are they getting constant reminders of the godly life through Bible reading, or are they getting educated by the smooth tongues in our culture? Sadly, there is ample evidence that these ministers are stumbling in the dark like everyone else, destined to fall into the ditch. Today, may we light our way with the lamp of the Lord and the Light of the World, Jesus Christ.

Dear Lord, thank you that we have a lamp to light our way in a dark world. May we have constant reminders of your love for us and our need to follow your ways. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
