I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

My attempt to eat cottage cheese a month past date showed me that the imperishable is better than the perishable. That is challenged by the Hostess Twinkie, thought to be good for 88 years due to preservatives. Paul had a different contrast in mind in this closing argument to the church in Corinth. The perishable, the “flesh and blood” world of the “here and now”, pales in comparison to the imperishable world to come at the last trumpet. The mystery is what it will look like. There is no mystery as to whether this will happen. The Bible is clear; that day is coming.

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow to celebrate that fact and to observe the Lord’s Supper with us, celebrating the communion of Jesus Christ with his church. Come and see that there is hope, not only for those who have fallen asleep in Christ but for those of us who have been chosen for salvation. Perhaps we will see the Lord add to the number who are saved tomorrow. Perhaps too, the change will come, in the twinkling of an eye, and the trumpet will sound. What a day that will be!

Dear Lord, thank you for the promise of a change. May we reflect the change you have already made in us through the forgiveness of sins. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
