So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
You may have heard of a lone wolf. They are rare wolves who leave the wolf pack but often, led by their hunger and need, either return to the pack or join a new one. Many people consider themselves lone wolves but everyone is led by something, Paul says here in Romans. They are either led by their needs of the flesh, or they are led by the Spirit. Ironically, the lone wolf would be surprised to learn that the one led by the Spirit in a church community is far more free than the wanderer. The lone wolf is in debt to the flesh.
How blessed we are to be led by God, the Holy Spirit, putting to death the things that led us into despair, making us think they gave us freedom! Praise God that we no longer have a spiritual death hanging over us but the new body and new life in a new kingdom to look forward to. We no longer wander around in our supposed freedom, looking for satisfaction in the world, but we run with a new group of believers, hungry for the kingdom and free from the bondage of sin. Let us live today as we are, free in the Spirit.
Dear Lord, thank you so much for the freedom we have in serving our Master. Help us to share the freedom we have found today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
