Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?
One can debate whether America is a Christian nation, either in its founding or in its current floundering. What cannot be denied is that in America, people have ample opportunity to know our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are born slaves to sin, but there are churches in abundance where the gospel can be heard. The problem is, as Paul warned the Galatians, we gravitate to our old master, sin, because, as Brian Chapell says, deep down, we love it. The Galatians were tempted to return to Judaism and circumcision. Americans are tempted to return to the world with its “can-do” spirit instead of the “cannot do” surrender to a new Master Jesus Christ.
Perhaps today is the day for all Americans to truly know God. Many of them profess to be Christians but their lives expose them as slaves to that which is not of God. The moral decay of the nation is the sad result of that slavery. May we be the antidote to the poisonous, weak, and worthless elementary principles of the world. May we ourselves have a deeper knowledge of God so we do not surrender to the same temptation to turn back to the broad way of the world.
Dear Lord, thank you for placing us on the narrow way. We pray for those on the broad path and for the nation they rule. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
