Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
In yesterday’s A Very Present Help, God reminded Israel of his deliverance and leading of them in their worst moments. He did so because of our aptitude for forgetting unpleasant things about ourselves. The Gentile Corinthians had forgotten their pagan background and the Jewish Christians had forgotten how God delivered them again, this time through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul knew they had believed because he planted the church. The plant was bearing bad fruit, however, and a reminder was needed, much like the letters we once received from bill collectors in our early marriage. They read, “Have you forgotten us?”
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow for a reminder of who Jesus is, who we are, and what he did. If you already know that, learn to hold fast to what you know so others will know it too. It was far too easy for the Corinthians to forget. My friend Lois posted on Facebook this quote,
“If Paul could see the church in America today, we’d be getting a letter.”
Come join us as we read someone else’s mail that may as well have our name on it. Try as we might, we need constant reminders of the gospel.
Dear Lord, thank you that we do not believe in vain and that your gospel is true. May we remember that in our daily walk. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
