If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh what is said.
One look at the universe will tell you that God is a God of order and design. One look at a seashell will also give you a sense of his attention to detail. Therefore, it should not come as a shock to learn that he desired design and order in his churches. He prescribed different roles for men and women. He ordained elders as shepherds of the flock. Here, he even spoke through Paul in detail about how he wants to be worshiped. Tongues and prophecy were part of a first century service but within a century, both vanished from the order of worship but there were rules for that too.
Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow as we survey the worship of the early church and compare it to our own worship service. I think you will be surprised at the resemblance. God desires order over chaos. The world espouses the opposite with its evolutionary model. God desires the fulfillment of roles. The world demands absolute freedom for people to choose their own destiny. Let us correctly worship the God who gave us the freedom to worship in a way that pleases him, not us. Join us to build up the church.
Dear Lord, thank you for the church and for the reason to worship. You saved us and we pray you hear our praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
