Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature.
Any teacher worth their salt will be able to tell if a student actually read the book they did the report on in class. The dead giveaway is content in the report that directly contradicts the book itself. The grade will hopefully reflect that attempt at subterfuge. There is a sad state of affairs with too many preachers. There are too many churches in America and around the world that conduct their worship services in direct contradiction to these verses from Paul to the church in Corinth. Perhaps they never read the book they claim to describe to their congregation! I wonder what grade they will get when they report to the Master, Jesus Christ. They are children in their thinking.
Today, let us seek to be childlike in our faith while mature in our thinking about the Lord and his word. It is too easy to form our worldview without the effort and tedium of careful study. Our Savior is too smart to be fooled by childish thinking and fake spirituality. B. B. Warfield calls these things Counterfeit Miracles in his book of the same title. May we not be fooled by a bogus book report but read the book itself. The return will be well worth the effort.
Dear Lord, thank you for the the truth contained in Scripture and for the cross. Help us to immerse ourselves in its text instead of counterfeit gospels. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
