For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

“I was only following orders.” That was the response of many an SS officer after WWII when they were tried for atrocities committed against Jews. It rang hollow then and it does now. Even the godless know that there is a right and wrong and these people must have known this was pure evil. However, if the orders are holy, just, and pure, it is our duty to follow them. Paul said he was following orders when he gave the gospel to the Corinthians.

Jesus followed orders from the Father when he went to the cross to die for our sins. He let his body be broken and his blood shed in order to institute the new covenant that saved us. He then gave us orders for the Lord’s Supper. Do this in remembrance of him. As often as we do it, we proclaim his death until he returns. Those are our marching orders. Get ready and get others ready for his triumphal march into Jerusalem. May we follow those orders from our Master and Savior today.

Dear Lord, thank you that you obeyed and were faithful. May we be faithful and obedient to your orders today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
