There is an evil that I have seen under the sun, and it lies heavy on mankind: 2 a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.
Mt father worked 34 years in a tire plant, only to have his pension gutted by the company’s mismanagement. He realized his dream of getting a boat in his retirement, and immediately got cancer. To his credit, he fought it for 9 years and used the boat when he could. This does illustrate ancient truth from the Preacher. We spend so much time working for the money we think we need but never have the time to enjoy the gifts God gives us for free, our lives, our families, and our salvation. Life is vanity indeed if we think this is all there is. So many people’s existence was contained within the twin towers when they fell. It is a grievous evil.
But there is a better way and the Bible tells us. The Sabbath was made for man so rest and enjoy it. Salvation is a free gift. Reach out and grab it. And, don’t labor for that which moth and rust will destroy. Our contentment is worth more than a Powerball Lottery jackpot, and a lot less stressful. Today, may we focus on what has been given to us, and that which we can enjoy forever in the presence of the Lord.
Dear Lord, thank you that we are heirs of all the riches of heaven. Help us to focus on these instead of the wealth of the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
