Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD,
who stand by night in the house of the LORD!
2 Lift up your hands to the holy place
and bless the LORD!
3 May the LORD bless you from Zion,
he who made heaven and earth!
“Brevity is the soul of wit”, said Polonius in Hamlet by Shakespeare. Sometimes excess verbiage is, well, excess. It is not often you can get an entire psalm in one devotion but Psalm 134 fits the bill nicely. It is also not often that such profound truths can be encapsulated into a few words. Psalm 134 achieves that feat as well. This is a song to all the servants of the Lord, including you and me. It tells us that the Lord is awesome and worthy to be praised. So praise the Lord! It ends with a benediction from the Creator of the universe. These are glorious truths indeed.
Each Sunday, we gather together as servants of the Lord and we guard our hearts against intruders like temptation or laziness. We “stand by night” in vigilance. We lift up our hands in worship as we sing to the King. We bless him and praise him for all the blessings he has bestowed on us.
There is not much more we can say about what it means to bless and be blessed by the Lord. So let us leave it with these few words. Praise the Lord!…
In brief.
