The LORD called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them…

God had done a lot of speaking at this point in history to Adam, Noah, Abraham etc., but this is the only time he spoke from the tent of meeting. He had spoken to Moses from the Ark of the Covenant but now Moses heard him from the tabernacle. “The Tent of Meeting, the visible sign of God’s presence for the Israelites”, M. F. Rooker says, is known to us as the Tabernacle, the temporary worship center that went with them wherever they wandered.

God directed Moses to speak to the people. This too was nothing new but now that they would be a nation, a law must be established. The Levitical Law was 613 statutes long and daunting to the last. It was God’s way of making sure the new nation ran smoothly. Imagine a game without rules and you get a glimpse of a nation without laws. The penalty for disobedience can be found in Deuteronomy 28 and it too seemed to be more than they could bear. Moses would say to the people what God required. They would fail to meet the requirement. They needed Good News.

We have the Good News of Jesus Christ. He kept all 613 statutes and then some, presenting himself as the perfect sacrifice, once for all, that satisfied the wrath of God and fulfilled the Law.

Now God speaks to us not from the tent but from the Bible. He says that if you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, you are saved. The Israelites could have exclaimed at the Law, “It is impossible!” Jesus declared from the cross…

It is finished!
