For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself.

The author of Hebrews was a skillful writer and explained the Bible as one story like no other. He wrote that God “found fault” with the Old Covenant so he instituted a better, New Covenant. The old had priests who sacrificed daily but our Great High Priest sacrificed himself once and for all. The priests sinned. Our Great High Priest is holy, innocent, unstained and separated from sinners. Our Great High Priest is the better Moses, the better David, the better sacrifice. He is the guarantor of a New Covenant that cannot be broken because he sealed it.

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow as our new elder, Carl Price teaches us about the flock and its shepherds, The church is the place to learn these things, that the Bible is one story of two covenants and that this one is better. Church is the place to learn that he is the Great High Priest and the Good Shepherd. It is the place to gather together to be kept safe, protected by wolves, fed, and sent out. As a lifestyle, this one is definitely better.

Dear Lord, thank you for the sacrifice and the protection of the Great High Priest and the Good Shepherd. Help us to worship him for all that he is. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
