Moses assembled all the congregation of the people of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do. 2 Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD.
Come to me and I will give you rest. I put that on our highway sign because I know the vast majority of people driving by Cape Community Church are exhausted. They may be going to the doctor, the courthouse, or to heal a relationship. All these things are tiring. God rested on the 7th day and made it holy for his people in the 4th Commandment. Sabbath was a sign of the covenant. To work on the Sabbath was a rejection of the covenant, and of God himself. It was serious. That is why the penalty for Sabbath breaking was death. The Lord who brought them out of Egypt was forgotten by these Sabbath breakers.
Today, Jesus is our Sabbath rest. We no longer work and toil for our salvation. We rest in him and his work on the cross. He said the sabbath was made for man so rest in it. Take a day a week to sit at his feet and recharge. Moses assembled the congregation to warn them of this. Make this Lord’s day a time to gather together and reflect on what he has done in bringing us out of slavery to sin. The Sabbath was made for man. Jesus was sent for man. Rest in him today.
Dear Lord, thank you for the cross and the rest we can have in Jesus Christ. Help us not to toil for what is a free gift from you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
