Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never!
The famous Groucho Marx line goes, “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” It is all funny but there is a sad truth to it in that people think they do not deserve to join the church. Our response is, of course you don’t and neither do we! Welcome to the club! What’s worse is the people who think they do deserve to be a member and then claim their member rights to do whatever they feel like because there was this cross that makes sure I am forgiven and saved. Some ministers have even gone so far as to connect with a prostitute. They could have been the pastor of the church in Corinth because it may have been in the job description! Paul’s reply to such thinking is a one-word reply common to the Corinthians. Never!
Do you not know? These are also becoming common words to the Corinthians but they are a common ailment in our churches. Do you not know what the Bible says? Do you not know that God hates sin but he would have you as a member of his church? This is a call to repentance of the sins that we think are our rights as members. This is a call to be a member in good standing in the church but to also bow the knee to the head of that church, Jesus Christ.
Dear Lord, thank you that you have paid our membership dues to be in your church. Help us to live lives that thank you in actions as well as in words. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
