Genesis 2:23-24
23 Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
I am incomplete without my wife Vicki and I am not even talking about our ministry but that is also true. All the things I am not good at, she excels at. Like Excel spreadsheets. But beyond that, she is by far the best thing that has ever happened to me. I sense that is how Adam felt and he said so. Up to this time we see the phrase, “And God said…” because only God had spoken. Adam’s first words were about the completion of creation, as if to say, “Now it is done!”
There is much being said about the roles of men and women in society and the church, and even the idea of gender is being challenged. There is no discussion of that here. Genesis 2 tells us of the beginning of the family and of the covenant. Adam and Eve were so connected as to be one flesh. When a man and a woman get married, they are no longer themselves, but ourselves.
It is the same with any covenant in ancient times. The two parties combined power, resources, and blood, mingling it together. They too become one. That is why God’s plan is perfect! We are in a covenant with God and it is sealed by the blood of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. We are in Christ and he is in us. When the bridegroom returns for the wedding feast, we can then say,
Now it is done!
