There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
1 and 2 Corinthians combined comprise the most words Paul wrote to any church. The reason is simple. They needed every word of it. They followed men instead of God, they were immoral, they sued each other, they abused the Lord’s Supper, and here they abused the gift of tongues. In all things, Paul turns their attention to building up. Here he exhorts them to do that which build up the church, not themselves. If a visitor came to the church in Corinth, they would leave confused, not knowing what was said. The church would not be built up. Later, Paul says that the other person is not built up. This living for others is foundational for the follower of Christ.
If a visitor comes to your church, will they understand what is said? Paul would have us worship the Lord, teach the believers, but also evangelize outsiders coming in. Increasingly, people are ignorant of Scripture or even who Jesus is. Let us be mindful and empathetic to those who have not heard the truth so the truth will be heard.
Dear Lord, thank you that you revealed yourself to us plainly in Scripture. Help us to teach others about you and your word so they will be built up and your church will be built up. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
