For I the LORD love justice;

      I hate robbery and wrong;

                  I will faithfully give them their recompense,

      and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

            9       Their offspring shall be known among the nations,

      and their descendants in the midst of the peoples;

                  all who see them shall acknowledge them,

      that they are an offspring the LORD has blessed.

These days, there is no shortage of talk about justice and the need for fairness and equity. It is useful to see what God has to say about justice. Here in Isaiah 61, as in many places in the Bible, God does indeed love justice. He hates when people are exploited, robbed, and wrongly treated. That much is clear. It is also clear that he expects us to treat people fairly and with equity. To what extent that means political involvement is unknown, but God promises them recompense from God himself. His divine justice will be carried out and when that happens, robbery and wrong will cease.

Come to Cape Community Church tomorrow as we talk about offspring yet again in our series on Good News in the Old Testament. We will see how his justice in the new kingdom will come about because of the Offspring. Come and see who this Offspring is and how we can receive the grace we do not deserve. This hardly seems like justice because we get off easy. Let’s rejoice in that unfair blessing bestowed upon us.

Dear Lord, thank you for the unmerited favor you show your offspring. Help us to be good stewards of the recompense you promise to us as we share the grace with those in need. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
