But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. 6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.
Companies and organizations have been trying to create comprehensive and memorable mission statements for decades. Some are short but encompassing. “Spread ideas” is the mission statement for TED. If there was a company called Gospel Inc., It might use these verses as the basis for their statement. Paul, scholars believe, may have used a creed that was making the rounds in the middle of the first century. It comprehensively presents the timeless plan of God in concise form. According to God’s will, he sent Jesus to redeem us from slavery to sin, making us sons.
One of our tasks in preparation for joining the BFC will be to work on a new mission statement for Cape Community Church. Based on the command Jesus gave us in Matthew 22 and 28, it could be short like, “Making disciples and loving our neighbor” or it could be longer and more comprehensive to include prayer perhaps. Whatever it ends up looking like, it is only a mission statement if we are on a mission. We can only be on mission if we believe and appreciate what God has done, contained in these verses.
Dear Lord, thank you for your perfect plan which had us included from the beginning. Thank you for Jesus and our redemption from slavery to sin. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
