2 Samuel 9:11-13

So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table, like one of the king’s sons. 12 And Mephibosheth had a young son, whose name was Mica. And all who lived in Ziba’s house became Mephibosheth’s servants. 13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king’s table. Now he was lame in both his feet.

Years ago at Cairn University, Vicki and I bumped into the Christian apologist Os Guinness, just before being informed that the event we were at was for VIP’s only and we were not supposed to be there. They were very nice about it but we sure slinked out of there! There must have been a hint of this sheepishness for Mephibosheth the first time he actually sat at King David’s table. Here he was, the son of Jonathan and the grandson of King Saul who tried to kill David! We can picture some at the table recoiling at the presence of a lame enemy. It would be at that time that Mephibosheth could point out what happened years ago between David and Jonathan. He entered into a covenant and that is why Mephibosheth could be there.

Yesterday, we celebrated the Lord’s Supper at our church. Before that happened, we recounted this story of how Mephibosheth may have felt and how sheepish we would feel at our King’s table if not for what he did 2,000 years ago on a cross in Jerusalem, where King David’s table was. He brought us into a new covenant and we now have a VIP invitation to the King’s table!

Dear Lord, thank you for the honor of a place at your table to commune with you and each other. May we never feel deserving of it nor sheepish at the invitation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
