In 1776, the Continental army was dead to rights at Brooklyn Heights. General George Washington needed to evacuate his troops, being outnumbered by the British. Secrecy was needed to avoid alerting enemy spies. Suddenly, a thick fog rolled in and shielded the evacuation from view. It was called a miracle. It recalled a resolution from May of that year. “The Continental Congress having ordered Friday the 17th… to be observed as a Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer…” Mighty works were indeed done in Brooklyn! Jesus did mighty works in Chorazin and Bethsaida. No one cared. Neither city exists today. The colonies repented in sackcloth and ashes and America stands as a bastion of freedom.
There is a problem in America today. We have forgotten the mighty works that have been done by God to allow us to exist as a free country. Brave men and women died to defend it but we have forgotten. Even Memorial Day barely rouses our gratitude. Jesus could say to us, “Woe to you, New York City! Woe to you, Washington DC! If these works had been done in China and Iran… That is just what is happening. The church in China and Iran is growing rapidly while church attendance and biblical values are disappearing in America. We need another Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer to repent in sackcloth and ashes. We need a fog to roll in because…
We are outnumbered.
