For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Two of my friends were talking after church yesterday about the only good time for total darkness and that is when you are trying to sleep. Otherwise, darkness is scary, uncertain, and disconcerting. Yet Jesus said that some love darkness. Why? While light is great for reading and can light the way when we are walking in the dark or driving at night, it is inconvenient because it exposes us for who we really are. It catches us red-handed at the sins we find most embarrassing, and it hurts our eyes when we are used to the dark.
Jesus is the light of the world. His light exposes us as sinners in need of a Savior. In the very next chapter, Jesus stopped to speak with a woman at a well. Suddenly, the light hurt her eyes as the wicked things she thought were a secret to Jesus were plain to see to the Light. Through this exposure, the woman and the whole town were exposed to the holiness and love of Jesus.
Whatever is in the dark in your life, it is only a secret to those you can hide it from. The Light of the world shines on all our secret thoughts and deeds. But through the conviction of sin, it can drive us directly to the Light. O sleeper awake…
The Light is on.
