Deal bountifully with your servant,
that I may live and keep your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold
wondrous things out of your law.
19 I am a sojourner on the earth;
hide not your commandments from me!
20 My soul is consumed with longing
for your rules at all times.
Never meet your heroes. We may be a fan of an author, form a profile of his or her greatness, and then have it all blown apart if we happen to meet them. That is never true of the Bible. The psalmist writes of a love for Scripture. What’s more, he loves the Author and has obviously met him. In the documentary The God Who Speaks, on YouTube, one scholar recalls meeting a man who loved the Bible but failed to know and love the Author. Likewise, Ligon Duncan says that if you find the Bible boring, you must never have met the Author. Here the psalmist has loved the Bible, met the Author, and loved him so much that he pledged his obedience to the word.
There is an epidemic of biblical ignorance in the world today. People who have never read the word, believed a word of the word, nor spoken a word one way or another about it, may feel that the Bible is boring. Maybe Isaiah did. That is until he met the Author in Isaiah 6. Now he wanted to know all about him and when he saw the mercy of God, he loved him, obeyed him and wrote for him the word. Today, if it has been a while since you opened your Bible, have a seat and prepare to have your eyes opened. None of this is hidden from you. May your soul…
Long for the word at all times.
